Information wants to be free

A year after the book Blogging from Home was launched, I decided to post a copy of its content online. This includes 2 podcast and 9 demonstration videos to complement it.

I think a book sales cycle is 1 year maximum. Afterwards, especially for non-fiction, the book is no longer a hot item unless it becomes a requirement for schools. However, as technology evolves so fast, a lot of things can also change in a short span of time.

Information wants to be free

In my opinion, a learning material loses its value if it is only shared to a few. This is also the reason I’m happy to discover Scribd as a method in sharing published works online without necessarily giving it away.

Posting the book online was already in my calendar since last month. After reading Chris Anderson’s book FREE, got the final push to do so.

This is also an experiment and will be observing if posting the book, videos, and podcast online can trigger opportunities. Will see.

One site that I have been looking at lately is Scridb. This allows publishers to post their work online for the world to see. I’m currently exploring this as a possible medium to publish my works in the future depending on how things will turn out.

As a trial, I uploaded our first DigitalFilipino StatsReport that was released last June 2002 - the Filipino Online Shopper Report.

Ideas for next book project: E-Commerce Series

My next book project will be the most ambitious to date. This is to update my e-commerce book but split them into a series to ensure ample coverage.

My priority topics will be in the area of search engine optimization, e-marketing, social networks, e-payments, and make money online.

I know that this project will be tough. But I guess that is the only way that I can set my offerings apart from the rest.

Additional topic suggestions and your insight will be more than welcome.

Lessons Learned: Blogging from Home book project

Filed under: Books — digitalfilipino @ 7:49 am

Two weeks ago, I just released the book Blogging from Home. For this blog post, I’d like to reflect on where I did well and the areas that I’m still working on to date.

  • Create a community
What made this project a bit different is I tried creating a community around it. This includes the launch of an upcoming e-learning program that will further support the lessons taught in the book, creation of a Facebook fan page, and photo gallery of book owners.
  • Lower the cost of shipping
I was able to find a shipping entity that allows me to ship the book at lesser cost ranging from 2x to 3x.
  • Expand reseller base
Despite challenges in finalizing a distributor, I was able to tap into my contact base and make them my book resellers.

I have additional activities in mind to further propagate the book and will post them here once executed.

My 4th book - Blogging from Home

Filed under: Books — digitalfilipino @ 4:24 pm

Bloggingfromhomecoverf
I’ve decided a few days ago that I shall be focusing my time hereon in publishing books and research reports. I gather a lot of information and experiences online.

This gets shared through my columns and blogs. However, compiling them in a book will certainly make it easier to disseminate these information.

This coming August 13 to 15, I’ll be launching my 4th book, Blogging from Home, during the 2nd Internet and Mobile Marketing Summit. If you have time, you can visit our booth anytime at the event to check out our book.

The book’s regular price is ten dollars (US$10). But you can avail of its launch price of eight dollars (US$8), plus three dollars (US$3) shipping within the Philippines, should you purchase on or before August 15.

This book is designed for aspiring bloggers and newbies who wants to have a perspective on how starting, managing, promoting, and even profiting from a blog takes place. As you may well know, my blogs are mostly simple ones created with various free blogging services. With that, there’s nothing really rocket science with what I do in blogging and have documented them extensively in the book.

This book should have been easy to do, I thought. Yet it took more than a year to finish its manuscript. With so many blogging books out there, I struggled in figuring out my niche. There was even a point of frustration that made me want to cancel this project.

However, I’m glad to have found my voice that allowed the writing and editing of the manuscript done in two weeks.

I’m thankful to have a good friend, Tony Bucu, who handled all of my book layout requirements since I started. He is a rare gem indeed. His current endeavors in entering the music scene is very challenging and hope you folks can check out and buy his work.

I hope you can drop by this August 13 to 15 and look forward in catching up with you.

Reporting a Friendster profile and advice to teen users of Friendster

Filed under: Weblogs — digitalfilipino @ 4:20 pm

A few days ago, my daughter, "J3", informed me that she has an impostor in Friendster.

I’ve been warning J3 of her excessive Friendster - ing. She just love this community as she has so many friends in it. Due to her young age and of the people she met, it can’t be helped that "girl politics" also comes into play.

Then this, a person created a Friendster profile using her identity, re-posted all her pictures and put vulgar sexual insinuation remarks in it. As a parent, this was horrifying.

Through this experience, I was able to put to test how Friendster handles complains:

  1. Report profile
When viewing the offending profile, you can click on the report profile at the bottom and choose from several options. Unfortunately this options are limited and there’s no way that you can explain things further. I did this for 2 days and even posted a message in the bulletin board asking friends to report the profile as well.
  2. Find a contact
After 2 days with no response, I used my LinkedIn to find someone working for Friendster and initiated a pass on request. That hasn’t reap any result as of this writing.
  3. Email help@friendster.com
I got a response from this one on the next day and the profile I complained about was already blocked.

I was already thinking of taking a legal action if the profile has not been put down in order to find out the identity of the person who did it and make them accountable for it. I’m glad that I did not have to reach that point.

Evaluation of Friendster support
The fact that the profile was deleted was a great relief to me. I think they also need to have more support people working for them in order to improve the response time. The lack of response after using the "report this profile" was very disappointing.

So to prevent what happened to J3 from recurring again, I gave a list of do’s and don’ts or else Friendster will be blocked from our home PC.

  • Don’t waste time arguing with people she doesn’t know online.
  • Post photos because you want to rather than having a "photo competition sport". I am amazed on the volume of photos teens post and it felt like they are competing with each other on levels of "coolness", "prettiness", among others.
  • Use the bulletin board responsibly. It is not a medium to rant, indirectly referring to fellow users (of course they know it is them), and challenge your enemies, no matter how right you are.
  • Use other social networks when possible. The reason why teens love it here is the capability of being able to jazz up your profile that sites like Multiply or Facebook can’t offer. But then again, when the community is becoming negative, it is best to switch to another and make it an enjoyable experience once again.
